Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to attend the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Every year Laureus celebrates the achievements of global sports stars; this year Olympians Jessica Ennis, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt (who raced some of the local talent on the beach and still managed to break 10 seconds!), Paralympian Daniel Dias and tennis star Andy Murray were all recognised for their contribution to sport, while Seb Coe was honoured with a lifetime achievement award. The list of nominees for each of the Laureus awards was a reminder of the extraordinary talent that is out there, and the incredible year of sport that we have enjoyed, and Rio provided the perfect backdrop for the ceremony; it is a city that shares an obvious love and passion for sport.
