Veteran quarterback Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints has been nominated for an award in the ESPY’s coming up later this month. The award he has been nominated for is the “Best Record Breaking Performance”, for breaking Johnny Unitas’ record of consecutive games with a TD pass in the 2012 season. Brees extended the streak to 54 games. Fans can vote online for Brees up until the night of the awards on July 17th. The Saints quarterback also won the award last year for breaking Dan Marino’s record of most passing yards in a season. It was the fourth time Brees won an ESPY award; he won three in 2011 for Best Male Athlete, Best Championship Performance, and Best NFL Player. Also joining him in this record breaking category for an award is Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions, USA swimmer Michael Phelps, and USA soccer player Abby Wambach.
In 2012, Brees was considered an elite quarterback with 422-of-670 throws for 5,177 yards. He had 43 touchdown passes, 19 interceptions, and was selected to play in the Pro Bowl for the fifth consecutive year. Last year, Brees worked wonders as he was playing without a running game, solid defense, or true head coach. Brees’ great accuracy, precision, and fundamentals helped him carry his team to a 7-9 season last year.
