Suspected Heroin Overdose: 1 Dead, 1 Hospitalized

One Croton resident is dead and his brother hospitalized after an apparent overdose of heroin this afternoon, police said.
Police were called by the men's father.
Patrols found the men at their home at 6 Wren Ln., in the Town Ridge development near the Cortlandt border.
Croton Police Sgt. John Nikitopolous said the 911 call came in at 1:28 p.m. March 19 to New York State police because it was made from a cell phone.
Patrols responded to the townhouse complex and found George Landers, 25, in his bedroom on the second floor. He was unresponsive.
His younger brother, Michael Landers, 23, was found in the living room.
After police cleared the scene, a paramedic pronounced George Landers dead at 1:45 p.m. His body was removed by the Westchester County Medical Examiner's office.
Michael Landers, who was conscious, was transported to Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow by the Croton EMS, Nikitopoulos said.
An autopsy on the 25-year-old Croton-on-Hudson man is planned for this morning, the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Police had intersected the Landers brothers' connection with drugs twice in the past six months.
Michael Landers was arrested Aug. 17 with 69 glassine envelopes of heroin after police responded to a tip about a drug sale going down on Lark Lane, The Cortlandt Daily Voice reported.
Lark Lane is a cross-street with Wren Lane in the Ridge Hill Homes townhouse development where Michael and George Landers live with their father.
At the time Michael Landers was charged with criminal possession of narcotics and criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, both felonies.
He had just turned 23.
In September 2012, George Landers was arrested by state police and charged with possession of a hypodermic instrument, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and criminal possession of a controlled substance, all misdemeanors. The incident took place on Springvale Road, according to The Journal News.
Police are investigating yesterday's incident but believe the heroin may have been too strong or tainted, officers told Newsday. Reported by Patch 1 day ago.

Young entrepreneur's life defined by dreams, not disability
Albuquerque, N.M., Mar 22, 2013 / 04:00 am (CNA).- Despite only being 27 years old, Tim Harris already has a lengthy resume.
The New Mexico native has won more medals than Michael Phelps, was voted homecoming king by the largest margin of votes in his high school’s history, is a college graduate and owns the “world’s friendliest restaurant,” Tim’s Place, in Albuquerque.
Although Harris was born with Down syndrome, his life has been defined by his dreams, not his disability.
“My inspiration,” Harris told CNA March 21, “is that I have wanted to open a restaurant since I was a kid.”
With the help of his family, Harris was able to realize that goal in 2010 when he opened Tim’s Place, a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and hugs.
“The best part is the hugs and all the love that comes with those hugs,” Harris said.
According to his digital hug counter that hangs on the wall, Harris has given away over 33,000 of them so far.
“I want people to feel comfortable and (give them) something awesome to have when they go home,” Harris explained. “They’ll give a hug to their people in their hometown … then they can send a hug around the state.”
Harris’ older brother, Dan, works as the operations manager while his father, Keith, helps with the “business side” of the restaurant. His mother, Jeannie, helped put up the pictures from Harris’ life which adorn a wall under the words, “I’m more like you than different.”
In the over two years that Tim’s Place has been in business, Harris has been featured on local news channels, NPR, People Magazine and NBC’s Today Show, to name a few. The media attention has brought in even more loyal patrons.
“I feel really happy when I’m with my customers and they’re just so happy for me,” Harris said.
Harris’ restaurant also helps support Special Olympics of New Mexico and the National Down Syndrome Congress.
“We support the Special Olympics because they do a lot for us,” he said.
While some of his favorite events are basketball, hockey, track and field and golf, Harris – a Special Olympic athlete and medal winner – has already begun training for volleyball.
Harris has three brothers, each of whom is a “superhero,” he said. Reported by CNA 21 hours ago.

How Comcast's $4.4B Investment In The Olympics Will Pay Off Big-Time

“I am so glad we stomached it,” he said of Comcast’s 2011 agreement to spend $4.38 billion to acquire additional rights.
“It is a fantastic platform for our company.”

Speaking to the Economic Club of Washington, Roberts cited NBC Universal’s successful use of the London Olympics to launch "The Voice" as just one example of the kind of synergies and promotional opportunities that having the Olympics package offers Comcast.
“As a business matter, it is the engine, but in and of itself we are not expecting it to make a huge profit,” Roberts said in answering a question from the club’s president, David M. Rubenstein, co-founder and co-CEO of the Carlyle Group.
Roberts said that the addition of golf as an Olympic sport in Rio will add to the benefits, allowing NBCU to offer even more choices of events on its broadcast and cable channel. The biggest benefit, he said, however, is the Olympic package’s visibility to distribution partners and to employees.
Roberts said Comcast had expected viewership of the London summer games last year would drop 10 percent from Beijing four years earlier both because of the time-zone change and because the 2012 games wouldn’t have Michael Phelps winning eight gold medals.
Instead, viewership for the London games rose 10 percent, allowing NBCU to break even instead of taking a $200 million loss. “If that continues in Sochi [Russia, home of the 2014 winter games] and beyond, that will be OK,” he said.
Roberts during a Q&A session generally sidestepped specific questions about NBCU.

Asked about reports that Jimmy Fallon would soon take over "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno, he said, “I think Jay Leno is fantastic,” but then declined to discuss “personnel matters.”
“I think [NBCU president-CEO] Steve Burke is doing a marvelous job,” said Roberts, calling the high-visibility TV network business “an imperfect business where everything is in a fish bowl.”
Roberts described NBCU Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt as “a super person picking shows” but otherwise declined to discuss NBCU’s fortunes.
Roberts said Comcast’s biggest surprise of its NBCU purchase turned up in an unexpected place. It was the value of the NBCU’s "Harry Potter" theme-park concept.
“A business that we didn’t count on that has proved to be amazing was the theme park business,” he said. “We had the company signed up and we had to wait a year to close and in the middle of that Harry Potter opened up in Orlando. Attendance surged 40 percent every day since then.
“We have about a billion dollars in cash flow coming from theme parks. We had zero in our business model when we bought the company,” said Roberts, adding Comcast is planning additional theme parks in the U.S. and overseas.
Roberts announced at the event that Comcast would begin rolling out voice actuated remote controls to its subscribers.

AL East: 'Ageless' Rivera Among Few Healthy Yankees

The organization known for its monetary excess didn't so much as dip a toe in the big free agency waters this past winter. Instead, they watched all the gaudy names (Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke, Nick Swisher) sign elsewhere while counting the walking wounded.
Shortstop Derek Jeter (no set date for return). Third baseman Alex Rodriguez (out until mid-season—at best). centerfielder Curtis Granderson (out until May), first baseman Mark Teixeira (out until late May—at best). pitcher Michael Pineda (out until mid-season, fingers crossed).
That leaves the 2013 Yankees with a serious power crisis and a cast of characters either too close to retirement age or pure reclamation projects.
The rotation looks archaic but solid, led by C.C. Sabathia, Andy Pettitte and Hiroki Kuroda. Phil Hughes, assuming his once-cranky back continues to heal, will be the fourth starter, and either David Phelps or Ivan Nova will take the fifth slot. Reinforcements can be found in the loser of the fifth spot battle as well as minor leaguer Adam Warren and reacquired ex-ace Chien-Ming Wang.
The Yankees bullpen could be even better than last year, with Joba Chamberlain fully recovered at last, a healthy David Aardsma, Dave Robertson, Boone Logan and the ageless Mariano Rivera pitching in his last Major League season.
The opening day lineup will be far less fearsome than in the past but offers the kind of speed previous Yankees teams lacked. Pencil in a rejuvenated Ichiro Suzuki and Brett Gardner, who missed most of last season, and you've got a speedy outfield duo eager to manufacture runs. Eduardo Nunez will get likely his final chance to prove his potential is legit as Jeter’s temporary replacement at short. Free agent signee Kevin Youkilis will likely play third until A-Rod returns, although Teixeira's loss may move the former Red Sox star over to first to spell new pickup Lyle Overbay.
General Manager Brian Cashman deserves heaps of credit for securing solid retreads to patch over roster holes in recent years (Freddy Garcia, Bartolo Colon, Eric Chavez and Andruw Jones).
This year, Cashman hopes a new gaggle of castaways (including Overbay and Brennan Boesch) helps the team tread water until its heavy hitters return to action. Until then, the squad's pitchers will have to keep games close, and if they remain collectively healthy they should do just that.
Bottom line: This year's Yankees team is a collection of question marks, not a postseason favorite. They'll repeat as Eastern Division champions if their senior citizens don't show their age … if Derek Jeter's ankle injury heals before May … if both Granderson and Teixeira return to form … if Youkilis isn't washed up at 34 … and if all the recent surgery scars don't become a visual metaphor for the 2013 Bronx Bombers.
That's too many “ifs” for Yankee Nation, but more than enough to give every other team in the division reason for optimism. Reported by Breitbart 1 day ago.

"It's not enough to call this the rare franchise action movie to bring the goods; it's the even rarer one whose creators seem to understand what the goods even are." Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice.
"The directive behind this sequel, clearly, was non-stop action. Let's think about that phrase a second. Do we really want our action movies to deliver action that does not stop? Ever? I get a little tired of action sequences that won't stop." Michael Phelps, Chicago Tribune.

"An 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' retread told from a postoccupation vantage point, this adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s YA romance novel unfolds in a dystopian future when alien parasites have nearly won the battle for Earth." Ben Kenigsberg, Time Out New York.
"The Host is a step up from the endless metaphorical lectures and gaping plot holes of Niccol’s last film, In Time, but its muffled emotions, delivered with Twilight-esque blank-eyed calm, put it in the same category of a creative idea hamstrung in execution." Tasha Robinson, The AV Club.

"This Chris Sanders fellow knows how to craft a heart-warming animation, and if not for a few minor problems this would have had a legitimate shot at the best animated movie of 2013." Laremy Legel, Film.com
"The movie is at its most interesting and amusing when riffing on how cavemen might have reacted to new experiences and ideas, like fire and shoes. Whether the kiddies will appreciate that is unclear, but they’ll certainly like the voice work done by Emma Stone as Eep." Neil Genzlinger, The New York Times.

Transgender man refused divorce due to same-sex marriage ban
Judge says he can't approve divorce because of insufficient evidence Thomas Beatie was a man when he got married
An Arizona judge has refused to grant a divorce for a transgender man who gave birth to three children after beginning to change his sex from female.
Judge Douglas Gerlach at Maricopa County family court ruled that the state's ban on same-sex marriages prevented Thomas Beatie's nine-year union from being recognised as valid.
Beatie was born a woman. He had a double mastectomy but retained female reproductive organs and gave birth to three children.
Gerlach said he had no jurisdiction to approve a divorce because there was insufficient evidence that Beatie was a man when he married Nancy Beatie in Hawaii. The couple's divorce plans stalled last summer when Gerlach said he was unable to find legal authority defining a man as someone who can give birth.
"The decision here is not based on the conclusion that this case involves a same-sex marriage merely because one of the parties is a transsexual male, but instead, the decision is compelled by the fact that the parties failed to prove that (Thomas Beatie) was a transsexual male when they were issued their marriage license," he said.
The ruling also said it did not address whether Arizona law allowed a person who was born female to marry another female after undergoing a sex change operation.
The National Cent re for Lesbian Rights, which was not involved in the case, has said courts have declared marriages involving a transgender person invalid in a handful of cases across the US, but that those cases had different factual and legal issues than those in the Beatie case.
Beatie was born Tracy Lehuanani Lagondino in Oahu, Hawaii. He began testosterone treatment in 1997 and had a double mastectomy and chest reconstruction surgery in 2002. He changed his Hawaii driver's licence to say he was a man and had a Hawaiian court approve his name change to Thomas.
Gerlach's ruling noted that Beatie halted the testosterone treatment and didn't provide documentation for any additional non-surgical efforts.
Beatie was married in 2003 in Honolulu and became pregnant because his wife was unable to have children. He conceived with donated sperm and gave birth to three children. The couple eventually moved to Arizona.
Beatie has garnered a range of media attention, making the rounds on talk shows such as Larry King and Oprah Winfrey and winning a spot on Barbara Walters' list of "10 Most Fascinating People" in 2008, alongside President Barack Obama, conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh and swimmer Michael Phelps. He also published a book, Labor Of Love: The Story of One Man's Extraordinary Pregnancy, with the cover displaying an image of a shirtless Beatie sporting facial hair and holding a hand over his bare pregnant belly.
